We’re joined in our 2nd episode of Season 4 by Dominic Stokes, Head of Live Events for Sheffield City Trust. His background in events spans over 30 years if you count his stint providing technical services to his local Amateur Dramatics Society whilst still at school, which he does because this was when he was awarded the title of “Best Follow-spot Operator in Grantham”.
Despite initially wanting to join the Fire Service, on leaving university in 1997 Dom joined Apollo Leisure on their trainee management scheme and this saw him moving around the UK working at a variety of different venues. Thinking he’d see this out for 12 months, he moved up the ladder and stayed with Apollo for 8 years, regarding it as a “brilliant learning ground”
His role continued to develop with Sheffield City Trust where he grew the conferencing and business events sector in their venues and, since 2017 he has been responsible for events at Sheffield City Hall and Sheffield Arena, proudly declaring “I’m now in my dream job!”.
Dom takes us on his journey, explaining that you’ll have the “best time fo your life” working in events, and describing why you have to “live it, love it, breathe it”. He also quotes T S Elliott, denounces apple sauce, and fancies himself as a young Robert Redford. Listen now to find out why.
